Savoury Oats – the basics

When I first heard about savoury oats – I was very apprehensive. I forget how versatile oats are and that they don’t just work well with sweet flavours. I’m keeping this recipe very simple and including only the very basics. I will add some topping suggestions at the bottom. If you fancy a change from avo on toast then you must try this!


  • 65g jumbo oats
  • 300ml oat milk (then add water if you want to make them runnier)*
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • Optional: 1 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • Salt and pepper to taste

*you can use any unsweetened milk you want, or water alone


  1. Add oats, milk, garlic powder, salt and pepper to a saucepan and bring to a medium-high heat
  2. Stir the pan continuously, adding water until you get the consistency you want
  3. Stir in the parsley and nutritional yeast, pour into a bowl and enjoy!

  • Poached egg
  • Avocado
  • Garlicy sautéed spinach
  • Sautéed mushrooms
  • Roasted vegetables
  • Balsamic tomatoes
  • Pine nuts & pesto
